2018 came and I still can’t believe that I am halfway through my second-year of medical school. Just a few more months, 2 big board exams, and we are ready for clerkships. But before I embark on that adventure I thought I would share a typical week of my second-year with you. The reason I am not sharing a typical day is because every day is different but the weeks are much more similar.
Monday: Mondays are usually exam days because of the various classes/activities that we have during the week. Most weekends are spent studying because I have an exam almost every Monday, but to be honest the constant studying prevents me from falling behind. I am also more likely to make a structured schedule and stick to it.
Tuesdays: Tuesdays are spent in clinic. As I mentioned before our school allows us to start working with a family medicine preceptor starting our second-year so we are exposed patient care early on. I have an amazing attending who has taught me not only how to carry out an exam for various patient complaints but also board worthy information that comes in handy during my exams.
Wednesday: Wednesdays are saved for clinical skills class and case review. During the first half of the day, we review note-taking skills, practice various physical exams, and perform oral presentations. The second half of the day is spent working through cases that are related to the block we are in. I love these cases because they present a chief complaint and lead us through the workup to diagnosis.
Thursday: Thursdays are for osteopathic medicine class. On Thursdays, we meet with an Osteopathic attending who goes over that week’s topic. This year we focus more on chief complaints and how to use the techniques we have learned to alleviate our patients’ pain.
Fridays: Fridays are free days OR saved for ground rounds. Grand rounds are meetings where physicians, students, and residents attend to watch a fellow resident or student present on an interesting case. There is facilitated discussion and active learning for the attendees.
The weekends I usually volunteer at a local fair, study for exams, or work out. In between all of the requirements and studying, I make time to shop at the local farmer’s market and go on lunch adventures with my classmates. Second-year is flying by and I am excited to put all this learning into practice in a few short months during clerkships! What does your daily/weekly schedule look like this year?
