Most of the time, I’m running out of the door because mornings tend to be much earlier than I’d like them to be. I also like to say that my stomach takes some time to wake up so breakfast isn’t always a priority for me. However, I know that’s not the best thing to do because we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So I thought I’d share the best foods to incorporate into your breakfast routine, especially if you’re always on-the-go like me. Most of these food items can be dressed up or down.
- Greek yogurt
- Grapefruit, bananas, apple
- Nut butter on whole wheat bread
- Berry smoothie
- Flaxseed or chia seeds
- Whole grain or bran cereals
- Avocado toast on whole wheat bread
My favorite on-the-go breakfast is a banana when it’s closer to lunch time or an apple with peanut butter if it’s extra early!
Now for the bad list of breakfast foods I highly suggest avoiding when starting your day. Now I’m guilty of indulging in some of these foods every now and then, but this isn’t an everyday occurrence, and sometimes, you just have to live a little!
- Sugar-packed breakfast cereals
- Pancakes and waffles
- Dessert muffins
- Store-bought fruit juices
- Toaster pastries
- Scones with jam and cream
- Gluten-free packaged foods (These foods are made with flours that lack protein and fiber.)
Breakfast has the potential to set you up for a day of great energy levels, stable blood sugar and control over your appetite and weight. So if you’re going to eat breakfast, make it one that contains protein, healthy fat and fiber from unprocessed, whole foods. But again, it’s okay to live a little sometimes!
