Since I had to take a little extra time off to study for the NBME, as well as taking a live online review course, I always felt like I was so behind compared to everyone else at my level. I have been done with basic sciences for several months now, and I just can’t seem to stay “caught up” with everyone else. I had to quickly change my mindset and stop comparing my progress and myself to other people from my class group. Everyone has their own personal and academic struggles, and it’s not fair to compare myself to them.
I had to learn not to worry about what everyone else was doing. 10 years from now (well, sooner than that I hope!), no one is going to ask me how long it took me to finish medical school. No one is going to ask me how much time I took off to study for my exams. I would rather take the extra time now to perfect my knowledge and learn everything thoroughly, so I can succeed on the USMLE Step 1, the ultimate goal. It’s okay to fall a little behind, as long as you’re actively working towards your ultimate goal. At the end of the day, we are all working towards one common goal = to pass the USMLE Step 1 and to become a physician. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to get there!
