So, I began general surgery this week and this rotation is definitely living up to its reputation. I realized that the only way to get through this one is to completely dedicate my life to it for the next six weeks. No evening plans, no weekend trips, and I try to get studying in whenever I can, but if I’m to remain sane I just have to maintain a mentality that this will be my life for the next month and a half. I know it sounds ridiculous, and scary, but the field of surgery has definitely been exhilarating to say the least. Scrubbing in on cases and standing side by side with skilled surgeons during so many rare and exciting procedures is probably some of the most exciting stuff I’ve done since beginning my rotations last August. Yes, the job is exhausting, but the amount of knowledge gained from these last six weeks was priceless. I can’t wait to continue this journey and see if the next six weeks make my passion for surgery grow, or if it will be slowly extinguished.
