This was probably long overdue for me, but I recently went in and basically deleted my online presence in the form of social media accounts. I deleted all my personal photos and anything else that linked me to an account online. I changed my name on the accounts as well, and made sure I cleared anyone off who I did not know in real life and had had interactions with before. I did this for more privacy and because you just never know who is out there looking at what you have posted online. Even with the highest privacy settings, your information can still be leaked and what is posted on the internet, stays on the internet. I didn’t have anything on the internet that I wanted to hide from anyone, but I still just didn’t want any more of my information out there.
Along with deleting my accounts, came with deleting the apps from my phone. This was an incredibly freeing experience because at some point I had become somewhat dependent on checking my accounts to see what everyone was up to. I always wanted to be in the loop with local media, as well as with my family and friends. Eliminating these accounts all-together has really helped me to stay off my phone and to focus on more important things. I was never one to be “attached” to my phone, but I realized I spent a lot of free time scrolling through social media when I had nothing better to do. I will probably get back on social media eventually, but for now, I am enjoying my time off of it. I encourage everyone to take a hiatus from the internet once in awhile because it really is an awesome experience to live “off-grid” in a sense!
