Tomorrow begins the first day of my hibernation into Step 1 study mode. My daily and weekly schedules have been made. My breaks and reviews have been meticulously placed. My biggest fear is becoming over saturated. Studying for 6 weeks straight is quite the task set before me. I have never had my only priority be studying. Tonight, I am excited and ready to hit the books, but how will I feel in 3 weeks or 4 weeks? My brain may become saturated. We all know that the amount of information that can possibly be held in the human brain is almost limitless but I think the Step 1 exam material may approach the upper reaches of limitless. My will to study may dwindle, so how can I keep myself motivated? I wish I had a personal cheerleading squad to stand behind me everyday, but I don’t.
The idea I had to stay motivated was to take my goals and put them in front of my face. Yesterday, I made 2 collages. The first collage is for more immediate inspiration. The collage depicts the beautiful scenery of various islands off of Thailand. The day after my exam I will be jet setting off to beautiful Thailand to relax during my remaining days before the start of third year clerkships. The second collage involves my long term goals. The pictures include: UCSF medical center, San Francisco General Hospital, Golden Gate Park and the cast of the hit show ‘ER.’ My goal to practice emergency medicine in San Francisco will drive me to study hard each and everyday. My friends will not be around to hold my hand for the next 6 weeks so it will take me, myself and I to make this dream a reality.
