Throughout my life, I have always had a job. Since I was 16, I was working somewhere part-time and earning my own money (even if it was minimum wage). So when I started medical school and couldn’t work, it was hard for me because I always had a routine centered around school and work. When I came to Chicago after basic sciences, I applied for jobs in retail, but nothing was really catching my eye. Nothing I really wanted to spend my valuable time doing. I also couldn’t commit to a set schedule because of school and studying.
I discovered a website where I could provide pet services to clients – dog walking, dog boarding, drop-in visits, house sitting, etc. This really attracted my attention because 1) I LOVE DOGS! 2) I would be able to set my own schedule – which is ideally something I always wanted to do. It’s worked out great because I can choose dates when I’m available for services, while still having time to study and take time for school/other obligations. Not to mention, I’ve gotten to interact with so many fun, friendly dogs! This is a huge plus for me because dogs are a huge stress reliever, and it’s a nice break during the day to go play with some pups. I had to leave my dogs in SC with my family while I’m here in Chicago for the summer, so I am still able to get my dog fix. Not to mention – I get to make money doing something I love!
