I have taken my share of NBMEs throughout the past year, and soon I will be taking my USMLE Step 1 exam. The dreaded exam that all medical students need to take in order to become a physician someday. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of articles and resources out there on how to prepare and how to succeed on the USMLE Step 1. I’d like to share a few tips on how I prepare for any big exam.
Taking a few days off from the exam in regards to studying and eliminating stressors is key for me in my preparation of taking a big exam. A few days before my exam, I put the books down and do something fun to clear my mind and eliminate stress, such as hanging out with friends, going to the beach, or even just reading a non-medical book. I love to also catch up on my TV shows during this time to help me unwind and relax before an exam. I personally do not benefit from cramming the few days before an exam, so it’s great to have some time to allow myself a break before the exam. I also make sure to catch up on my sleep a few days before the exam as well because studying constantly leaves me exhausted and overwhelmed. I make sure to start a good sleep schedule a week or so before the exam so I feel refreshed and not tired during my actual exam. What are some ways you prep before a big exam?
