Rank order lists for all prospective “matchees” are due on February 24th at 9 pm EST. It’s been a rather complex process in terms of putting together an actual list for me. I started out wanting to be really objective: figuring out important criteria like location, didactics, etc., then grading each program by this selective list of criteria, and finally putting it all on a huge spreadsheet so I could compare each program side-by-side and make an informed decision. Yet, I ended up with a list of 40+ criteria, not really grading each program because I couldn’t decide what sort of scale I wanted to use, and then my huge spreadsheet was a big fail given that it was only maybe 10% complete.
So, I went back to the drawing board. I read through the notes that I had taken after each interview and this proved to be the best at invoking how I felt after each interview day and what I thought about the program. Of course, I had forgotten some of the objective details about the individual programs and the notes helped with that, but I found myself thinking about the culture of the program, how I would fit in with the faculty and residents, and how the program would help me get to where I want to be in three years. When I started to think about where I would want my soul to be for the next three years, the order of programs became somewhat clear. Even though I’m all verified, paid, and certified, I still wonder if I should have made changes. Yet, I’ve been told that changes late in the game are often regrets afterwards. Hopeful that everything works out great!
