The weekend that I look forward to all year long has come and gone, but boy did I have an amazing time. I participated in the Physician Researcher Initiative Fellowship program, which allowed me to get an up close and personal look at the field of Academic Medicine, a personalized tour of the NIH, and the ability to present my research at the national research forum. On top of this, as chapter president for my school I had some regional meetings to attend and a chapter presidents’ meeting.
We can’t forget about the networking events, both professional in the exhibitors fair and personal at the Board of Directors’ and Regional Directors’ parties! Where do I begin…the tour of the NIH was great! It definitely made for a long day as it started at 6:30 a.m. and I had sessions straight through until 9 p.m. including my research presentation which went exceedingly well. During the day, I was elected as the new Assistant Regional Advisor for Region 5 and received a Basic Sciences Scholarship from the organization!!! Absolutely shocked, but I can’t begin to describe my gratitude to the SNMA for all that they have given me through opportunities, friendship, guidance, support, and now scholarship dollars!
I had a great time at the RD-Party afterwards to celebrate (its always the best one of the weekend lol). The next day, I was in sessions and meetings all day until the Board of Directors’ Banquet, which was awesome too! There was a little party afterwards and somehow I managed to step on some glass and cut my foot (I promise it wasn’t bad), but it didn’t stop my partying. My SNMA family and a really awesome friend stepped in to save the day. A little bandage and costume change made it all better and I was back at it.
My friend and I then took a midnight “walking tour” of the city and I have to say it was one of my favorite experiences of the entire weekend. Now, studying for this exam tomorrow, I wish I could re-live this weekend over and over again. My SNMA family, my friends, it all comes together at AMEC. With only 10 hours of sleep total this weekend, I am energized and raring to go, knowing that these amazing people are standing behind me!
