WHAT a way to start to my OB/GYN rotation!
After a busy first week of fetal heart tracings and pre-eclampsia evaluations on the Obstetrics portion of my OB/GYN clerkship, I had the surprise of my life! My boyfriend was supposed to be in Japan (he was still on winter break from law school), but he surprised me at our alma mater to propose to me in song! And then surprised me again by gathering my family and friends from literally all over the country who met us to celebrate at our favorite wine bar that night!
It’s amazing the amount of planning that needs to go into a proposal, let alone a proposal to a busy (and naturally suspicious!) med student:
What if I had been scheduled to be on call that night? My boyfriend had e-mailed the OB/GYN clerkship coordinator weeks in advance requesting that I not be scheduled that particular night.
What if I had planned to spend the night studying (…like I do many weekend nights!)? My boyfriend had asked his parents to take me out to dinner with his brothers the night of the proposal because he knows how I get homesick, especially just after being home during a school break.
What if I had started to catch wind that something fishy was going on? He went to extreme measures (checking into airports in cities he was supposed to have layovers in, telling me stories about people he sat next to on the plane and going through Customs, and even finding a picture of the airplane runway in Japan on Google to send once he had “arrived”) to ensure I would be totally off guard.
He really did an amazing, super thoughtful, and crazy stealthy job, and it was truly a night to remember! It’s a shame my ring won’t get to spend much time on my finger during OB/GYN (lots of scrubbing into surgeries and messy deliveries), but I’m beyond excited to be marrying my best friend! Planning a wedding while in school will surely be a challenge, but an exciting one. 😉
