Many of my days lately have been full of studying–for boards, classes, and my public health classes. At times I wake up before the sun comes up and go to bed without noticing what day or time it is–I call it medical student amnesia. How do I stay focused?
I set a schedule for myself first and foremost. I make sure that I stick to my schedule and almost ALWAYS have a reward for myself at the end of a long day. For example, I plan to watch a few episodes of my favorite show, cook a new recipe, or facetime my puppy. I think that no matter how big or small the reward it’s always nice to look forward to something fun after a long day of studying. Sometimes, when I have a long week I try to save my reward for the very end so that I am motivated to keep going.
One of the last piece of advice that I find has been very helpful lately to keep going is to have conversations or look up role models that have accomplished the same dream. It’s always refreshing to see someone who has made it through the trials and tribulations. Remember that we are in this together and your hard work will eventually pay off so don’t give up!
