Let’s talk about some new essentials now that times have changed, thanks to COVID-19. My everyday necessities have now changed for me. Sometimes, what our “old normal” looked like seems like a foreign concept. Every time I leave my home, I realized how much I used to take for granted seeing people, seeing their smiles, and hugging people. I miss our old normal, but right now, we must forge ahead with the new normal in the safest way we possibly can. It’s the right thing to do. In July, I was working in psychiatry emergency services. I saw COVID-19 positive patients just about daily because you never know who will walk through the ER. I’ve always loved following the fun YouTube videos of influencers especially when they did “what’s in my bag?” or “these are my essentials” videos because you never know what new gems you may want to add to your everyday routine. So, here are my top 5 essentials—I even threw in a bonus.
1 – Masks: This is a must-have and now a given. In fact, you can’t even walk into an establishment in Mississippi without a mask, and I think that’s a great thing. I now have a mask collection and they’re so much fun to share a bit of your personality. You can even coordinate them with your outfits. Just do the right thing and #MaskUp
2 – Hand Sanitizer: This one is also a must. I mean need I say more? My advice—keep one everywhere. We touch our faces all the time. I know I do, and I have become much more conscious about it. It’s also great to have some wipes with you to wipe your phone down.
3 – Lip Balm Stain/Lip Tint: Just because no one else can see it doesn’t mean I still can’t wear something for myself. I love how it makes me feel put together. Plus who wants chapped lips?
4 – Business Card: I am super proud to be a patient advocate and involved in organized medicine. I currently serve on the American Medical Association (AMA) Ambassador Steering Committee and Mississippi State Medical Association (MSMA) Board of Trustees. I like being able to share my contact information quickly and efficiently.
5 – Wallet: Again, this one seems to be a no brainer, right? We all need identification and $$$
Bonus—Jewelry: I love statement earrings to add a pop of something to an outfit. I also like having a nice watch—telling time is a good thing, even though I still always manage to be late.
Bottom line: Please do your part & #maskup to protect yourself and those around you. I constantly think about my family in the back of my mind, especially my parents. I get these are hard times, but we need to do better. What are your essentials?
