Recently one of my mentors asked me to go lunch and it was during that conversation that we discussed the importance of working with underserved populations. One of the main factors for entering the medical profession was working with underserved populations. As I come to an end of my medical school journey, I am beginning to see the impact that we have as medical professionals on the underserved population. From the pediatrics population to the older age groups, they all have specific needs that might not always be addressed. The fact that people are out there supporting them in their efforts to take advantage of their own health is a promising first step. What I think is unfortunate and disheartening is the lack of primary care physicians in underserved areas given that individuals in those areas need the care the most. I think that more efforts should be put into increased those numbers. What has your experience been like working with underserved populations?
