Having a partner who is also in medicine can be difficult at times. I wanted to create this post for those who are also in the same situation to shed some light on the best way to maintain a relationship. One of the most important aspects of having two people in medicine is the ability to understand each other’s tough schedules. There are going to be days, weeks, and even months when you two will be apart. But what is more important is making the best out of the days that you do have together. We generally try and plan our vacation days together so that we can take a mini staycation or just spend quality time together. We also take time each week either via video chatting or by telephone to talk about our daily accomplishments and update each other on what is going on in life. I think that having open communication about expectations and making the most of the time you spend together will help to maneuver this tough yet rewarding path.
