Trust me, I’ve been there. It’s 2 PM, and it’s already been a long day. You’re hungry, and it’s easy to make bad choices with a vending machine nearby. So here are a few ideas for energy boosting snacks that are cost-efficient and can get you over the afternoon slump especially with USMLE Step studying upon us!
- 1 banana or apple + 1 tablespoon PB. The natural sweetness in fruit takes longer to metabolize than processed sugars in packaged desserts and candy. Plus, the protein in the PB will provide a longer lasting form of energy.
- ¼ cup dried fruits and nuts. This is super easy—I tend to go for roasted almonds, dried cranberries and raisins, and cashews. Having a good mix of protein, good fats, and fiber will provide sustainable energy to get you through the day. A small handful is plenty.
- Veggies and hummus. I’m all about some carrot sticks, sliced bell pepper, and celery. Now you can buy individual-serving cups of hummus at the store. Easy peasy.
- Berries. These are full of fiber that tastes yummy! Super easy to keep in your lunch box.
- String Cheese + Whole Grain Crackers +/- Turkey Pepperoni Slices. When you’re craving something a little salty, this will fix your palate right away!
- No-Bake Energy Bites. Just google various healthy recipes for energy bites, and you’ll find an abundance of combinations that will suit your sweet tooth!
- Spicy Roasted Chickpeas. All you need to do is season rinsed and drained chickpeas with olive oil, salt, and cayenne pepper. Throw them in a 450-degree oven for about 15 minutes, and you’ve got yourself a quick snack to take on the go!
- Pretzel Sticks. These are an easy snack option that will satisfy your craving for a salty snack. Better than greasy potato chips. Need a dipping sauce? Try some form of mustard or get creative and make your own!
- Popcorn. You and I both know you can get carried away with this. Stovetop popcorn is probably the healthiest, but I’ve managed to find bagged popcorn in the store with sea-salt for only about 37 calories per serving.
- Protein Bar. Whether store-bought or home-made, this is probably the quickest and easiest option.
