The month of February is known as “Heart Health Month.” February is dedicated to promoting and spreading awareness of heart health to people all around the world. The heart is an organ that is essential for our survival. So why aren’t we taking better care of it?
According to The Heart Foundation’s website, heart diseases are the number one leading cause of death among both males and females. However, it is also one of the most preventable groups of diseases! It’s imperative that, as future physicians, we stress the importance of prevention to keep their hearts healthy. Simple lifestyle changes are key to maintaining a healthy heart.
- Consuming a healthy diet not only benefits the heart but benefits your overall well-being and quality of life. There are also products you can include in your diet to help your body even more. For example, you can add a garlic supplement to your diet to help with a healthy heart.
- Incorporate exercise as much as you can; even parking further away in a lot or taking the stairs vs. elevator can be beneficial.
- Don’t skip out on your yearly appointment with the physician –it is important to be checked yearly and to discuss risk factors with your physician to see if you have a chance of developing a heart condition.
- Discuss with your family members about the importance of heart health, and explore your family history to see what heart diseases run in the family.
Let’s spread love and knowledge this month and promote the importance of a healthy heart!
