Residency interviews have been coming to an end thus far and I have learned a lot on the interview trail. I’ll save those learning points for another post because for now I wanted to talk about what it means when people say that residency is all about the “right fit.” As I journeyed through the nation, I got the chance to meet some amazing programs, residents, and physicians. Each of the programs had their own specific characteristic which made them unique. Knowing yourself as a candidate, what you want out of a residency program, and what your future goals all will help you connect with the right program. There will be people, a place, and a program that will meet all of those needs hence why interviewing is part of the process. Remember that as a candidate you are interviewing the program just as much as they are interviewing them. Ask all of the right questions, keep a notebook full of your thoughts post interview, and have an open mind… you will eventually find the right fit!
