Residency is just hard. Most of the time, you typically won’t have all of your holidays off because you’re working. For some, they never get holidays off because that’s just how the chips fall or the cookie crumbles. So how do you make the most of the holidays whether you’re working in the hospital or spending it at home with your family or on vacation?
If you’re in the hospital, go in with a smile. I know, it’s really hard to do, but these patients don’t want to be in the hospital. If you can be happy for them during these special times of the year, it will be much appreciated. Also, lean on your team. Your team is your family away from family. Maybe y’all can all bring a dish and have your own holiday celebration while y’all are working in the hospital together. Make it count. Great memories can still be made. Plus, you can always FaceTime your family, and I know they would appreciate getting to see you even if virtually. In fact, in the times of COVID, many of you may be celebrating with your family virtually for safety measures (rightfully so).
If you’re with your family or going on vacation, please take precautions and be as safe as possible. You have no idea how lucky you are to spend the holidays with your family, so cherish that time. But please be safe and smart about it during these times as we prepare for a third wave or I guess now in the middle of it. Make every moment count. Let your family members know how special they are to you! You are the light of their life, and I imagine they are so proud! Enjoy the holidays—what a special time to come together and show gratitude for life and for one another!
Wishing you all the joy and happiness this holiday season!
