During MS4, you find yourself struggling. Maybe physically. But mostly mentally. Between Step 2, and sub-internships, and interviews…4th-year is really hard.
So what do I recommend? The same advice I was told when I interviewed during my medical school interviews: Whatever you do for fun–double it. Running, cooking, reading. Double it. Find an extra route. Book a hotel with a kitchen so you can cook. Pick up two books for reading.
During your interviews, you will be asked about what you do for fun. When you answer, take the time to brag on it. I was told to brag on your passions. Take the time to have fun. Because next year, as an intern, there won’t be much time outside of surgery, or whichever field you go into.
Every month I pick a new ingredient. This month, it’s juniper. It’s my key ingredient that I use in all my recipes. I cook at least three times a week. Because it gives me a sense of self. Next month, who knows?
What do you use to keep yourself happy during MS4?
