I honestly don’t even know where to start with how special Match day is; truly, I don’t have words to describe it. I feel a spectrum of emotions—everything from panic, worry, anxiety to happiness, joy, and hopefully relief. Match day is such a monumental day for any medical student in their training to become a physician. It is truly such a wonderful feeling to know you have matched, but there is something to be said for finding out WHERE and WHAT SPECIALTY!!
With the increasing competitiveness of matching into a residency, many medical students apply to more than one specialty. I completely understand why, and I did the same. It is scary knowing you may or may not match, so why not take all precautions? Once you find out if you’ve matched on Monday, the waiting game begins to find out where.
Before I went to bed, I realized how important it was to me that I match in my number one program. You realize where you truly want to be and why. If you applied to more than one specialty (I did), you realize what you truly want and where you fit. It’s anxiety-inducing knowing you have to wait.
I believe programs find out the day before you do, and that is also scary. So, there I was in bed wondering: where am I going? Will I match at my dream program in my dream specialty?
For some, their dream program is Harvard or Hopkins. For me, my dream consisted of making a difference in my community and home state where we desperately need physicians.
Although my anxiety was through the roof, I felt comfort knowing that everything will work out the way it is supposed to because faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase. Read my next post to find out where I matched and what specialty!
