Of course, I woke up early because I could barely sleep. Today is the day I get to find out if I matched my dream specialty! My heart was racing, and every minute until 11:00 AM Central felt ten times as long. My younger sister (second year medical student) was with me. She’s my person, and there was no one else I would have rather by my side to open up this email.
It dawned on me what a long journey it has been—one of happiness, sadness, self-discovery. I have grown more in the last year that I have ever before. And in just a few moments, I would know where I would spend the next 3-5 years of my life training to take care of people and growing as a person.
After graduating Valedictorian of my high school, I began a long journey. In that time, I have pursued 9 years of education and 3 degrees. And now, I’ll be training for 4-5 more years! They say home is where the heart is, and that could not be more true (or at least for me)!
I’m excited to announce and share that I matched my NUMBER ONE choice and will be continuing my training in Psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center with the hopes of pursuing a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship in the future. I want to be double boarded and equipped to treat everyone in need of mental health care.
Having grown up in a state with the highest physician shortage in the country and a rural area at that, I have seen first-hand what health disparities look like, especially in mental health. I hope to be a part of the solution in closing the gap. Serving my community and home state is the greatest gift, and matching into training is the greatest blessing!
Cheers to achieving my dreams, and congratulations to every medical student who feels the same way matching! Even COVID-19 can’t take away how special this day is! I am so excited to join a dedicated group of individuals who serve and care for people everyday! #Match2020 #DistanceMatch
