So I’m here in Kansas City at the AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) conference and I’m having an extremely good time! I’ve learned a lot and I’m only been here for like 24 hours. One of the things that makes me so excited about AAFP is that all of the vendors here, all of the sessions here, everything that goes on at this conference, is set up specifically for students and residents interested in family medicine. I’ve heard from residency program directors on different things that may assist me in getting the residency spot that I want. From interviewing to writing my application to ensuring that my personal statement is exactly the way that they like it to be, it gives me an opportunity to further my competitiveness for residency.
Even more so, I’ve enjoyed all of the networking opportunities! Whether with colleagues or those that are current residents or even residency directors themselves, I found that people are genuinely like minded and really enjoy some of the same aspects of life that I do. Is it possible that this is all because family medicine actually has a personality type?
One of the greatest things about this conference is that all of my questions are getting answered and I’m learning a lot about what it is that I like and what it is that I don’t like as far as programs are concerned. I’m also making a lot of friends here! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the conference is like! If it’s anything like the first half of the day, I’m in for a treat!
