Let’s play a fun game, medical students! Gather your fellow medical school comrades and get your five fingers in the air. As you go through the list and lower one finger for each item that applies to you. The last one with a finger in the air wins.
- Learned about a rare disease in lecture and convinced myself that I (or someone you knew) had it.
- Told everyone I know that I want to go into surgery.
- Told everyone I know that I would settle for “whatever specialty I get accepted into.”
- Self-diagnosed in every. single. lecture.
- Fallen asleep in class and been called out on it.
- Chatted with friends on messenger during a lecture when I should’ve been paying attention.
- Forgotten to eat because I was so busy studying.
- Gone through a study session without snacks.
- Been jealous of anyone and everyone who did not choose a career in medicine.
- Told myself that I was quitting and dropping out of school.
- Said, “I’ll just have one drink and then go back to studying.”
- Eagerly volunteered to be an assistant in the cadaver lab.
- Thoroughly enjoyed cadaver lab.
- Been kicked out of the rotation for not knowing an answer to the physicians’ questions.
- Made conversation with a stranger and when they find out that I’m a medical student, they bring up the illness or symptoms that their aunt’s, dad’s, girlfriend’s son has, and ask for a diagnosis/medical advice.
