We’ve all said it. A countless number of times. When confronted with a question by a patient that we don’t know how to answer, “Oh, I’m just the med student, let me get the doctor.” But in a few short months…we will be the doctor. Fourth-year is a very weird transition time. There are certain things that we feel very confident doing without a doctor even in the room. And there are also things that we have still never heard of. Yet soon WE will be the doctors. Granted, that is what residency is for. We will be doctors, but we will still be training. But the title of ‘doctor’ will be given to us.
It is scary, but we can find comfort in the fact that every doctor before us has been in this same position and they have all survived. We just need to continue to study, know our limitations, and always put the patient first.
