Time off in residency is quite literally termed “golden.” We have the “Golden Weekends” which means that you have both Saturday and Sunday off in addition to 3-4 weeks of vacation time depending on the program. So then how should one make the most of these days off?
Well, it all depends on the specific individual. For my weekends off, I generally like to sleep in, relax, and enjoy time with my husband or family time-permitting. I also clean my entire apartment, meal prep, and binge watch some shows that I have been dying to see.
The week-long vacations are planned a little bit differently. Unfortunately, we are now entangled in a pandemic so traveling is very limited. Therefore, I have been a bit creative with my planning this time around…keeping in mind the importance of social distancing and staying safe. For my first week of vacation, I have decided to explore the hiking trails and wineries in the current city where my residency program is which has been lots of fun! I have also recently gotten into audiobooks that I can borrow for free from my local library and listen to while walking the trails near my parent’s house or a close-by beach. I have also been able to schedule some of my own health maintenance appointments such as visiting my primary care and the dentist. There are also many locations around my city that are within driving distance where one can practice social distancing while still enjoying some sun and great outdoors.
While I wish that I was traveling the world right now, I know that keeping ourselves safe is the number one priority right now. Plus what a great time to save some money, support local businesses, and plan my next overseas adventure when it is appropriate to do so.
