“You are the average of the company you keep.”
I remember someone telling me this two years ago and it made me think about my closest friends and their impact on my life. The friends I’ve made in medical school have been some of the most brilliant and caring people I have ever met. Why am I bringing this up in a medical-related blog? Because these same friends are a huge part of why I have been successful and mentally stable in medical school. Medical school is one of those things that is hard to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it, which creates a very close bond with those who do. Through the rigorous exams, boards, applications, and rotations, I knew that we could talk about our struggles and help lift each other. However, regardless of whether you are in medical school or not, I believe that if you want to be a certain way, you should hopefully surround yourself with those who emulate that. I also hope to be a friend that brings something to the table (but that’s something I’ll have to awkwardly ask my friends someday)! I wanted to dedicate this blog post to some of the best people of my life in medical school and why I hope to be the average of all of you.
S: Thank you for being so kind because it makes me want to be the same way to everyone I meet. You are so giving and I can foresee you being a favorite of your future patients. Also, you like to craft and love school supplies so thank you for being weird with me.
K: Thank you for being so confident and persistent in what you want. This makes me want to be less timid and more straightforward with the things that I want. I also know that if I was ever stuck on the side of the road 1.5 hours away in a sketchy area, you would be one of the first people to volunteer to find me. That’s why I believe you’re going to be one of the best doctors ever.
Be: You are literally the most positive person I know and you always remind me that it’s okay to feel awful and that I’m still a rock star at the end of the day. Also, your jokes and lightheartedness melt with my humor so this is fine.
Br: Thank you for being persistent with what you want to do in life. No matter how negative and moody I may be after a bad day, you always reassure me that it’s okay to feel that way. We are moody buddies for life!
I wish I had more time and space to write about all of the other amazing people in my life. This post would be so so long if I did so but you are all of equal importance to me. I believe that I am a better person because of the people I’m around and I write this blog to hopefully spark some thoughts about the company you keep and hope that you have some of the best people surrounding you too.
